For golf course managers in the northern parts of the country, we slip into what we refer to as the “off season”. This is a time when the snow is flying, the temperatures are dropping and quite frankly, we just do not have much traffic walking through our doors. This is when we need to be creative in bringing our clients the news and information they are looking for from their respective golf clubs.
Building relationships with clients should not be limited to only the peak season. We must develop innovative ways to reach out to them. This can be done in several ways:
- Develop a communications budget and plan. Once a budget and plan has been adopted, set some accountability to your staff.
- Communicate special incentives and programs through email blasts. Develop a database of addresses and distribute information online. These email blasts should be short and to the point. In today’s busy world, we can all become overwhelmed with too much email. We have found that keeping the emails short and to the point will get more readers.
- Plan special events for the off season. These events can be both outdoor or indoor activities. Whatever the activity is, be certain to have information regarding future events to distribute to your clients. Build some excitement around these upcoming activities through marketing flyers or simply talking with them about upcoming events.
- Hard copy mailings, while old fashioned, remain one of the best communication tools we use. Newsletters, flyers and announcements are no trouble to create and easily distributed. However, this can be one of the more expensive ways to reach out to members.
While the temperature might be cold outside, you can still heat things up a little inside with the creation of some innovative communication tools. Use these tools to continue building relationships during your off season. You just might find your “peak” season grows to new heights!

Nice!!
